Brief History and Evolution of Acrobatic Gymnastics

Did you know that acrobatic gymnastics has roots in ancient Greece, the medieval circus and Chinese acrobatics?

📜 Origins in Antiquity

Acrobatics is not a modern invention. In Ancient Egypt, paintings of people performing impossible balancing acts can already be found, while in Classical Greece, people practised jumps and physical exercises that we would recognise today as acrobatic movements. In China, martial arts and acrobatic dances were also a fundamental basis.

🎪 From the streets to the show

  • During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, acrobatics were kept alive in fairs and travelling circuses. It was a street art that combined risk, fun and skill, designed to surprise and thrill the audience. It was here that acrobatics became synonymous with spectacle.

🏛️ From entertainment to sport

In the 20th century, countries such as Russia, China and Germany began to give it structure: they created schools, specialised training and rules. Acrobatics went from being entertainment to a sporting discipline with a high level of technique and preparation.

🏆 Official recognition

The big milestone came in 1999, when the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) recognised acrobatic gymnastics as an official discipline. Since then, world championships have been held and more and more countries are practising acrobatic gymnastics.
