What is artistic and acrobatic gymnastics?

Did you know that there is a sport where the body becomes art, adrenaline and pure technique?
Artistic gymnastics and acrobatics combine strength, flexibility and coordination... but also teamwork, creativity and fun.

If you've ever wondered what exactly these disciplines are all about, what makes them so spectacular or why they are gaining so many followers around the world, read on. This is your journey to discover them from the ground up.

🤸‍♀️ What is artistic gymnastics?

Artistic gymnastics is one of the best known and most practised disciplines in the world. It is the one we see at the Olympic Games, where gymnasts perform routines full of strength, precision and elegance.

It is divided into two main branches:

👩‍🦰 Women's Artistic Gymnastics

  • Soil: routines choreographed to music, mixing acrobatics, turns and expressiveness.

  • Balance beam: extreme precision on a bar only 10 cm wide.

  • Asymmetric bars: fluid and spectacular aerial movements.

  • Pony jumping: power, speed and technique in the air.

👨‍🦱 Men's Artistic Gymnastics

  • Rings: full control of the suspended body.

  • Horse with bows: continuous circular movements with trunk strength.

  • Fixed bar: acrobatics and high altitude aerial spins.

  • Parallel, floor and jumping: strength, power and agility.

Each apparatus requires different skills, but they all share a common base: discipline, coordination and total body control.

🤸‍♂️ What about acrobatic gymnastics?

Acrobatic gymnastics is a group discipline where two or more people perform team exercises involving throwing, balancing, human figures and synchronised movements.

There are no apparatuses here. The body is the apparatus.

Work is being carried out in:

  • Pairs (base + flyer): spectacular figures in the air.

  • Trios or quartets: perfect coordination to form human towers and dynamic transitions.

  • Group routines: with music, creativity and a lot of synchronisation.

This discipline stands out for its visual aspect, teamwork and the enormous development of trust between partners.

💥 Benefits for practitioners

Both artistic and acrobatic gymnastics offer incredible physical and mental benefits, even from an early age:

  • Improving the strength, flexibility and coordination.

  • Mayor body awareness and movement control.

  • Discipline, perseverance and self-esteem.

  • Development of the creativity and the ability to overcome.

  • In the case of aerobatics: promotion of the teamwork and mutual trust.

🎯 Who can practice it?
